Tokayev collects more than double required signatures, is registered by CEC for presidential election

NUR-SULTAN – The Kazakh Central Electoral Commission (CEC) registered May 3 President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as the Nur Otan party candidate for the June 9 presidential election after Tokayev collected 313,653 signatures from 17 regions of Kazakhstan.

Candidates are required to collect at least 118,146 signatures, which is 1 percent of Kazakhstan’s 11,814,019 registered voters, according to Central Election Commission regulations.

Nur Otan party First Deputy Chairman and Tokayev’s authorised representative Maulen Ashimbayev said the party will open regional and national public campaign headquarters for Tokayev.

“I will head the national headquarters. We will do everything to ensure a transparent, open and fair election held in accordance with the laws of Kazakhstan and international norms,” he said, reported tengrinews.kz.

The registration of candidates will continue until 6 p.m. May 11. Candidates are allowed to campaign from the end of the registration period to midnight June 8, one day prior to the day of the actual voting.
