ASTANA – According to the Astana Office of Tourism, Physical Culture and Sports, on Feb. 28, the capital will host the main public ski event of the year, Burkasyn 2015. The mass sports festival, which has already become traditional, will be held for the 13th time this year.

The ski race starts at the banks of the Yessil River at the city’s Municipal Park, between the pedestrian bridge and the bridge on Saryarka Avenue, near the Astana Park Hotel. The event is open to all students, residents and guests of Astana.
The competitions programme includes mass runs for men, women, boys, girls, children, pensioners and people with disabilities. Traditional ski track winners will receive commemorative prizes and gifts.
In addition to the main ski races, participants may join competitions in other sports, such as weight-lifting, arm wrestling, hockey, belt wrestling in the snow, winter indoor soccer and arkan tartys (tug-of-war). Fishermen of the capital and the bordering regions will hold an open city ice fishing championship. In addition, skaters from sports schools, as well as children and adults, will give demonstrations and performances.
Registration of participants will start from 11 a.m. Mass races will start at noon, the astana.gov.kz website clarified.
The Burkasyn 2015 festival will mark the formal closing of the winter sports season in Astana, the city administration announced.
