ASTANA – The Almaty Region Apple Growers Association (ARAGA) is preparing the necessary paperwork to secure international geographical indication registration for Almaty Aport apples as a unique Kazakh brand, Silk Way TV reported on Oct. 18.
As stated by Sholpan Abdreyeva, the director of the intellectual property rights department at the Kazakh Justice Ministry, the application for the Almaty Aport geographical designation submitted on Aug. 29 will be under review for four months.
“The certificate for the Almaty Aport geographical indication was issued on Oct. 13, marking its registration under the national procedure,” she said.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gave the directive in 2019 to make Almaty Aport apples a globally recognized brand on par with such products as Roquefort cheese, Parmesan cheese, or Bordeaux champagne.
After compiling a list of countries where the ARAGA seeks to register the products as a protected geographical indication, the intellectual property rights department will offer guidance and support in completing and submitting the application.
