Kazakh President creates new trade and ecology ministries, appoints new ministers

NUR-SULTAN – Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev directed June 17 the creation of the Ministry of Trade and Integration and the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources to improve the country’s public administration system.

The new Ministry of Trade and Integration takes over the functions of the Ministry of National Economy in the formation and implementation of domestic and foreign trade policies, international economic integration and consumer protection; of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development in technical regulation, standardisation and ensuring the uniformity of measurements; and of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination of export promotion activities.

The Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources assumes the functions of the Ministry of Energy in the formation and implementation of the state policy in environmental protection, management of solid household waste and protection, control and supervision of the natural resources’ rational use; of the Ministry of Agriculture in the use and protection of water resources, water supply, water disposal and forestry; and of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development in state geological study and reproduction of the mineral resource base.

The President instructed the government to redistribute the employees of the previous ministries and their subordinate organisations and to work with the President’s administration to create the new ministries.

He also appointed June 17 former Nur-Sultan Akim (Mayor) Bakhyt Sultanov as Minister of Trade and Integration and former Vice Minister of Energy Magzum Mirzagaliyev as Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.

Kazakh Prime Minister Askar Mamin introduced the ministers to the staff of the ministries. During the presentation, Mamin noted Sultanov’s experience in senior positions. Sultanov headed the Ministries of Economy and Budget Planning and Finance. He also worked as Deputy Prime Minister, the President’s Assistant and Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration.

Mirzagaliyev is a qualified specialist and an experienced leader, said Mamin. He worked in the oil and gas industry as deputy chair of Kazmunaygas and vice minister of oil and gas.
