The press service of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy National Company (KTZ) recently announced that the volume of the company’s carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere has been reduced by 1.5 percent during 2014-2015.
According to the press statement, the negative impact on environment was downgraded thanks to the implementation of prescribed measures of environmental legislation. It included reduced usage of liquid and solid fuels, the use of cleaning equipment, reconstruction of eco-protection objects and the development of regulatory documentation.
The Kostanai Temіr Zholshy boiler houses began to use special dust and gas cleaning equipment and the locomotive company started to use a special biological solution to process oil-contaminated soil. An effective drainage system was installed at the Akzhayik station and Kazievka station and the East Kazakhstan branch of the railroad was equipped with electric heating. A new sewerage system was installed in the locomotive repair service centre at the Kostanai station.
As a result, fines and excessive fees for the past year were decreased by 36 percent in comparison to 2014.
KTZ participates in international environmental projects implemented on the base of the International Centre for Environmental Safety opened with the Russian Railways company in 2015. The centre brings together railway companies of Russia, Armenia, Estonia and Kyrgyzstan.
In addition, in November 2015 the railway administrations of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries signed an agreement on environmental cooperation development. The document emphasises the responsibility of railway companies for carbon dioxide emissions and the need to reduce them. In the same period KTZ joined the International Union of Railways to address environmental problems.
