ASTANA – The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) will provide $100 million as part of a $670 million financing package arranged by Bank of America to support the further development of Almaty International Airport, the largest aviation hub in Central Asia.
The financing will support modernization of the domestic terminal, upgrades to airside infrastructure and aircraft de-icing facilities, and expansion of the cargo terminal, reported EDB on Sept. 29.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between the international and domestic terminals, accelerate baggage handling, streamline apron operations and expand parking capacity. Airside upgrades are also expected to increase operational efficiency and airport capacity.
Almaty International Airport serves more than 32,000 passengers daily. Passenger traffic reached 12 million in 2025.
EDB Chair Nikolai Podguzov said the bank was pleased to continue supporting the airport’s development as part of the new Bank of America-led syndicate.
The financing also involves Merrill Lynch International, Société Générale, the Turkic Investment Fund and Kazakhstan banks, reflecting international interest in Kazakhstan’s infrastructure projects.
EDB, DEG (German Investment Corporation), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) previously financed the airport’s expansion and modernization in 2021, including the construction of a new international terminal that opened in 2024. The project increased the airport’s annual design capacity from three million to 14 million passengers.
The new financing matures in 2033.
