ASTANA – After the All-Star match in the Kontinental Hockey League, Barys Astana is coming to the end of the regular KHL season.
Initially, Barys played host to Severstal of Cherepovets. The match was quite tense. With half a minute to go before the end of regular time, Barys replaced their goalkeeper with a sixth player, giving Roman Starchenko the chance to score. During extra time, Barys’ Nigel Dawes scored ensuring his team’s win.
In the next game, Barys stumbled against KHL leader CSKA of Moscow, 1:5.
After that, Barys headed west, where they met with the hockey club in Sochi, also called Sochi, and with Torpedo in Nizhny Novgorod.
Barys had no trouble in Sochi, beating their opponent 4:2. Torpedo, however, proved tougher opponents, and though Barys scored first, they conceded the match, 1:2.
Over the remaining seven games of the KHL regular season, which will end for Barys on Feb. 24, the team will play Metallurg from Novokuznetsk, Siberia from Novosibirsk and play Amur of Khabarovsk twice. The remaining three matches Barys will play at home in Astana against the same rivals from Novokuznetsk, Novosibirsk and Nizhny Novgorod.
With 77 points after 53 games, Barys has firmly established themselves in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with a good chance to improve their standing and play in the playoff rounds for the Gagarin Cup.
