Grass Carp to Help Clean Capital’s Water Basins

ASTANA – Forty thousand young grass carp grown in the hatcheries in Taraz were recently settled in the Yessil River by a cooperative effort of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ecologists and authorities from the Astana city government.

Grass carp are valuable food fish, which live on aquatic vegetation and quickly adapt to changing environmental conditions. It is also believed that they will help clean the sludge from the water basins of the capital.

“This is aimed at drawing the attention of all citizens of Kazakhstan to the work of the UNDP in environmental protection,” said Stephen Tull, resident coordinator of the UN agencies and UNDP permanent representative in Kazakhstan.

Tull added that every citizen of Kazakhstan can also become a participant of the environmental movement by taking such simple steps as saving energy, recycling waste and eliminating the use of plastic bags and disposable tableware.
