In a video message published on the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) official social media accounts, the world No. 1 expressed her excitement about qualifying for the season-ending tournament.
“I’m very happy to qualify for the WTA Finals. Come and watch us play in Indian Wells,” Rybakina said.
Rybakina secured her place in the tournament ahead of schedule, becoming the first player to qualify for this year’s edition. She will return to defend her title after winning the WTA Finals last season. The Kazakh player has enjoyed an outstanding season, winning the Australian Open and the US Open before reaching the top of the world rankings for the first time in her career.
Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva have also secured places in the singles competition. The remaining five spots will be determined over the coming weeks.
Rybakina’s participation comes after concerns over a back injury forced her to withdraw from a recent tournament in Wuhan, China. She took time off to recover following a demanding North American swing.
The WTA Finals bring together the leading players of the season. This year’s tournament is scheduled to run from Nov. 8 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
