The Kazakh national Special Olympics team won 125 medals and exceeded their targeted metal count by three times at the July 25 through Aug. 2 Special Olympics in Los Angeles, according to the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan.
More than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries took part in this year’s Special Olympics. Kazakhstan was represented by 68 athletes in 15 events, winning 28 gold, 49 silver and 48 bronze medals.
“The Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports every day around the world. We empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all. Using sports as the catalyst and programming around health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance,” the venue’s site reported.
The Games were founded in 1968 and are held every four years under the motto “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
