Kazakhstan’s Population Reaches 20.6 Million As Astana Records Fastest Growth

ALMATY – Kazakhstan’s population increased by 14,230 people in July, reaching 20.6 million as of Aug. 1, according to data from the Bureau of National Statistics.

The country’s population stood at 20,590,000 as of July 1. By Aug. 1, it had increased to 20,604,800. Since the beginning of the year, Kazakhstan’s population has grown by 104,997 people, compared with 90,767 people as of July 1. The population growth rate increased from 0.44% to 0.51%.

Meanwhile, the migration balance remained almost unchanged. The positive migration balance stood at 5,703 people as of July 1 and 5,578 people as of Aug. 1.

Urban population continues to grow

The number of people living in urban areas increased from 13.19 million on July 1 to 13.21 million on Aug. 1. Urban areas gained 21,174 residents during the month. In the first half of the year, urban population grew by 105,475 people.

Migration accounted for a significant share of urban population growth. The positive migration balance in cities reached 65,914 people in January-July, compared with 53,539 people as of July 1. Natural population growth in urban areas also increased to 60,735 people, up from 51,936 as of July 1.

The rural population declined during July. The rural population decreased from 7.4 million people on July 1 to 7.393 million on Aug. 1, a decline of nearly 6,900 people. At the same time, natural population growth in rural areas remained positive, reaching 38,684 people since the beginning of the year, compared with 33,128 people as of July 1.

Migration outflows drove the decline. The negative migration balance increased from 47,836 people in the first half of the year to 60,336 people as of Aug. 1.

Astana leads among major cities

Astana recorded the largest population increase among Kazakhstan’s cities of national significance. The capital’s population grew from 1.683 million people on July 1 to nearly 1.69 million on Aug. 1, an increase of nearly 7,900 people. Since the beginning of the year, Astana’s population has increased by 51,429 people, or 3.14%.

Almaty’s population rose from 2.374 million to 2.38 million during July, adding nearly 5,900 residents. In Shymkent, the number of residents increased by approximately 2,700, from 1.31 million to 1.313 million.
