ASTANA – In a turn of events rarely seen in any hockey league, Barys hockey club goalkeeper Vitaly Eremeyev scored a goal in the Oct. 19 3:2 Barys victory against the Sibir hockey club.

It was a close, physical game for Barys Astana, one of the squads no team wants to face this season, but with the help of luck, Barys Astana came out with the win.

After 40 minutes of play, few things were going in favour of Barys and they were losing 0:2. They then scored a power-play goal before tying it up with a little bit of luck. Sibir attacker Igor Ozhiganov, who had three shots on goal in the game all past the net, took a wide shot, which bounced off the boards and somehow found its way into the Sibir net. The goal was credited to Barys goalie Eremeyev as no other Barys player touched the puck.

“It is in our tough spirit,” Eremeyev said of the way the team hung in there for the win.“This is why this Barys season is different. We don’t give up and play until the end. Maybe this is why Barys is still among the leaders.”

As of Oct. 20, Barys led the Continental Hockey League (KHL) with 74 scored goals, is second in the Eastern Conference with 40 points and has played two fewer games than Ak Bars (41 points) who crushed Barys 5:0 on Oct. 12.

Also last week Torpedo lost to Barys 2:4, while Barys beat Metalurg 5:3. And on Oct. 21, Barys defeated Admiral of Vladivostok on its home ice 3:1 to retain one of the leading positions in the KHL.
