Musicians Nurbol Aliyev and Aida Zhurmanova toured the U.S. through the Golden Gates programme.

SHYMKENT – Two musicians from the Sugir Orchestra of Kazakh Folk Instruments toured the United States recently as part of the Golden Gates programme. Aida Zhurmanova (kobyz) and Nurbol Aliyev (dombra) took part in a 40-day tour across the United States along with musicians from Georgia and Russia.

The Golden Gates project was initiated 10 years ago as a cultural and educational programme that allows creative people from different countries to show their culture through art, in particular music and choreography. In this case, a group of dancers and musicians moved from one city to another for 40 days giving concerts at various venues. They visited 45 cities in 22 states in total.

Both Kazakh musicians were born in the countryside of southern Kazakhstan and both are graduates of the capital’s Academy of Music, now the Kazakh National University of Arts.
