ASTANA – The World Series of Boxing (WSB) Astana Arlans team continued its undefeated streak to four wins this season by beating the American Knockouts 5:0 in Karaganda on Feb. 8.
In the first bout, veteran Kazakh WSB flyweight (up to 52 kilogrammes) Miras Zhakupov outboxed Brent Venegas III. In the lightweight (60 kilogramme) match, Yerzhan Mussafirov in his debut fight defeated Maliek Dawnnell Montgomery to extend the advantage to two wins. Next up, Kazakh National Champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov in the welterweight (69 kilogramme) category was victorious against Brian Ceballo. Light heavyweight (81 kilogramme) Croatian Hrvoje Sep faced Steven Nelson and scored the fourth win for the Arlans. In the fifth and final encounter, super heavyweight (91+ kilogramme) Filip Hrgovic of Arlans finished the evening with a confident win over American fighter Brandon Glanton, who was making his debut. Olympic champion and general manager of the team Serik Sapiyev admitted that the home advantage contributed to the confidence of his boxers.
“[We] wanted to win with the maximum advantage [on the scoreboard]; I was just hoping for a win, no matter the score. I was somehow confident that we would win,” Sapiyev said.
