ASTANA – The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Kazakhstan-initiated resolution proclaiming April 22 as the International Day of Greening the Planet, marking another step in Kazakhstan’s efforts to promote global environmental cooperation.

The resolution was adopted in New York on Aug. 31. The initiative was first proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.
April 22 was chosen for the International Day of Greening the Planet as the date also marks Earth Day, an international environmental observance traditionally associated, among other activities, with mass tree planting. The new UN observance therefore builds on an existing global tradition of environmental awareness and action.

The new international day is intended to raise global awareness of the importance of greening and restoring natural ecosystems and encourage governments, the UN system, international and regional organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to undertake related initiatives and activities.
The resolution focuses on strengthening efforts to protect the environment, restore ecosystems, expand green spaces and promote environmental awareness and culture.
The initiative is also aligned with Kazakhstan’s national environmental campaign, Taza Kazakhstan, which promotes responsible attitudes toward the environment, improvement of public spaces and greater environmental awareness among citizens.
The adoption of the resolution represents the practical implementation of another international initiative put forward by President Tokayev and underscores Kazakhstan’s efforts to advance environmental issues through multilateral cooperation.
By establishing a dedicated international day, Kazakhstan is seeking to place ecosystem restoration and greening higher on the international agenda and encourage countries to translate environmental commitments into practical action.
