WBC Names Gennady Golovkin, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Best Boxers of 2015

ASTANA – World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman announced Jan. 12 Kazakh middleweight WBC interim champion, unified World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and absolute WBC champion Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as winners of the WBC’s Best of 2015 competition.

“Only the passage of time can tell what was an individual career peak, but both Canelo and Gennady seem to be in absolutely great moments in their respective careers,” Sulaiman said in a WBC release.

According to Sulaiman, the most anticipated fight of 2016 might be a matchup between Golovkin and Alvarez. Early speculation said the fight was going to occur in September but some believe Golovkin’s camp is not happy with the financial terms presented by Alvarez and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.

“Well the champion is the champion, but Gennady certainly has all the merits to be a fifty-fifty favourite in this fight,” Sulaiman said of the possible bout.
